New England Football League game set Saturday
The Twin City Riot from Bangor will play their final New England Football League game of the season on Saturday night when it hosts the New Hampshire Timberwolves (N.H.) at the Winkin Complex Field on the Husson University campus in Bangor.
Game time is 5 p.m. The admission is $5.
Diamondbacks fire Gibson as manager
Kirk Gibson is out as manager of the Arizona Diamondbacks and bench coach Alan Trammell also was dismissed on Friday.
The moves come less than a day after the Diamondbacks hired Dave Stewart as their new general manager.
The Diamondbacks said the search for a new manager will begin immediately.
Earlier this year, the club brought in Tony La Russa as president and then fired general manager Kevin Towers.
The 57-year-old Gibson compiled a 353-375 record in more than four seasons as Arizona’s manager.
Patriots sign DL Bass to practice squad
The New England Patriots signed defensive lineman Ben Bass to the practice squad on Friday.
Bass, 24, was acquired by the Patriots in a trade with the Dallas Cowboys in exchange for defensive back Justin Green on Aug. 15. The 6-foot-5, 295-pounder Bass was released by the Patriots on Aug. 26. He originally joined the Cowboys in 2012 as a rookie free agent out of Texas A&M on May 14, 2012 and spent most of that season on the Cowboys’ practice squad before being activated to the 53-man roster on Nov. 13, 2013.
The Patriots also released offensive lineman Chris Martin from the practice squad.
Hurricanes’ Staal has successful leg surgery
Carolina Hurricanes center Jordan Staal underwent successful surgery Friday to repair a broken fibula in his right leg.
General manager Ron Francis reiterated on Friday that recovery time will be three to four months.
Staal was injured in the third period of a preseason game at the Buffalo Sabres on Tuesday. He got his right skate caught in the ice while taking a check. He went down and had to be helped off the ice.
