Body of Bar Harbor man recovered from Donnell Pond

FRANKLIN, Maine — Divers with the Maine Warden Service located the body of a drowning victim about 10 a.m. Monday from Donnell Pond in Township 9 SD.

The victim, Ian MacDonnell, 33, of Bar Harbor jumped late Sunday afternoon from a stopped motorboat to retrieve a water bottle that had fallen overboard, according to a press release issued at noon Monday by the warden service. MacDonnell did not make it back to the boat, and wardens were first notified about 5:35 p.m. Sunday to begin the search.

The search continued until dark Sunday and resumed Monday morning.

MacDonnell was traveling with another man and two women, including a female minor, in a 16-foot Bayliner motorboat when the incident occurred, according to the release. MacDonnell was not driving the motorboat. There were life jackets in the boat, but they were not being worn at the time, wardens reported.

Members of the Hancock and Franklin fire departments assisted wardens in the search.

The warden service indicated that the incident remains under investigation.
