• 1961— Rockport tree surgeon and diver Harry Goodridge spotted a little harbor seal swimming alone by Robinson’s Rock. He decided to take the seal, which he believed to be an orphan, home to raise. Goodridge named Andre after a seal trainer he had met at Marineland in Florida.

• 1961 — As a pup, Andre required a lot of care. Harry and the family fed him milk at first and Harry carried him to the harbor to go swimming two or three times a day. Harry used fish and a whistle to teach him tricks, which eventually numbered nearly 100.

• 1962 or so — A seal surfaced at the harbor in Marblehead, Mass., and started doing tricks for startled and delighted bystanders. Folks there dubbed the seal “Josephine” and started a fan club. But “she” was Andre, who stayed for several weeks before coming home, according to the Goodridge family.

• 1960s, 1970s — Andre started to garner fame because he returned home to Harry Goodridge and Rockport every summer. Hundreds of people crowded around his “stage” in Rockport Harbor to watch his daily summertime performances, for which Andre was always rewarded with fish.

• 1970s — The federal government passed a law to prevent people from keeping a wild animal without a license. Harry stymied agents, according to his children, when he showed them that Andre came back of his own accord.

• 1976 — Andre began to winter at the New England Aquarium in Boston in part because the mischievous seal had begun to exasperate local fishermen. Harry loaded Andre into the back of his station wagon in late fall and drove him to the aquarium. In spring, Harry Goodridge went back to take Andre to the water’s edge and tell him to “Go home!” He always did.

• 1980 — Andre has a role in Toni Goodridge’s wedding. Harry’s daughter decided to have the seal swim for the wedding rings, held underwater by a diver, and hump them over to the best man. Later that year, Andre is taken to the Mystic Aquarium in Mystic, Connecticut to spend the winter.

• 1986 — Harry found Andre dead on Robinson’s Rock on July 21. He had suffered a beating from a younger seal over the harem of females on the island.

• 1994 — Hollywood makes the movie “Andre,” ostensibly about Andre the Seal. But when Andre was portrayed by a California sea lion, it was a letdown for many.

• 1990 — Harry Goodridge died at 74.

• 2014 — New documentary about Andre the Seal to debut. This time, “The Seal Who Came Home” will star a seal.
