Crews battling blaze at Sappi mill in Westbrook

By Dawn Gagnon, BDN Staff

WESTBROOK, Maine — Crews from several southern Maine fire departments are at the scene of a fire at the Sappi Fine Paper’s Westbrook mill, a fire department dispatcher confirmed Friday evening.

The fire began about 6:30 p.m., he said.

Additional details were not immediately available. Crews were still at the scene as of 8 p.m.

The Westbrook mill, near Portland, is one of two in Maine operated by Sappi Fine Paper North America, according to the company’s website. The other, its Somerset Mill, is located in central Maine.

Westbrook is also home to Sappi Fine Paper’s North America Technology Center Research and Development facility.

Currently, the mill is primarily a production facility for specialty release papers and films, the website noted.
