Two people look at the train cars that derailed in Rumford on Friday.

RUMFORD, Maine — Three train cars derailed Friday, but the reason why wasn’t immediately clear.

The derailment happened along Route 108 near the intersection with Riverside Drive at about 6 p.m. The cars derailed, and the track beneath them was badly ripped up.

The derailment happened on the Rumford Branch of Pan Am’s tracks right at the Rumford Rail Yard.

Neighbors said the area was badly flooded by recent thunderstorms, but it’s not clear if they played any sort of role in the derailment.
