A few dozen still without power Down East

MACHIAS, Maine — Emera Maine was working Wednesday to restore power to about three dozen customers still without electricity after Tropical Storm Arthur battered the Down East region last weekend.

Thirty-seven customers were still experiencing outages as of early Wednesday afternoon, reported company spokesman Bob Potts, with most of them — 32 — in Washington County. The number of outages was down from 544 on Tuesday afternoon.

At the height of the storm on Saturday just under 22,000 Emera Maine customers were without electricity as high winds toppled trees and branches across power lines. However, the total number of power outages throughout the storm was closer to 35,000, according to Potts, since some customers already had been restored when the outages peaked, and others lost service more than once during the storm.

The downed trees also blocked some roads, hindering the repair efforts of Emera Maine’s crews, who were assisted by 60 utility workers from southern Maine, Pennsylvania and Rhode Island. The coastal portions of Washington and Hancock counties suffered the brunt of the power outages.

Further south, another 6,000 Central Maine Power customers had their electricity service restored by Sunday. Also, about 5,000 customers of the Eastern Maine Electric Cooperative, which serves parts of Washington, Penobscot and Aroostook counties, were affected by the storm.

Emera Maine crews made “amazing progress” Tuesday afternoon and through the night and into Wednesday, said Potts.

The company still expects to restore power to all customers by the end of Wednesday, he said. Crews will continue working until every outage is alleviated.

“We want to thank each and every customer who lost their service during this storm,” said Potts. “We sincerely appreciate their patience and, in most cases, support of the hard work by our field and office staff who gave up their own holiday weekend with family and friends to return power to Emera Maine customers.”
