Wednesday, June 25, 2014: Phone dependence, Michaud for governor, support Geoff Gratwick

Sarah Smiley’s June 23 BDN column was a very sad, but entirely true, commentary on our society. I’ve witnessed exactly what she talked about in restaurants from here to California. It’s apparent that personal, face-to-face communication is fast approaching its demise. No matter where you go, people are sitting, heads down and thumbs jabbing, never once making eye contact with their companions.

I’ve begun to believe that mankind will soon be evolving into a species with specialized thumbs, pointy little digits that are just perfect for the keyboards on electronic devices. At the rate we’re going, it should take only two or three generations to get there. Darwin never could have imagined this.

Michaud for governor

Since 2010, more than 200 restrictions on abortion rights have been passed in state legislatures across the country. While Maine has managed to avoid passing similar restrictions thus far, the stakes for women and families are simply too high to leave this year’s election to chance. That’s why I’m pleased to see that Planned Parenthood Maine Action Fund is taking an active role in the fight to protect reproductive freedom in Maine by endorsing Rep. Mike Michaud, D-2nd District, for governor.

As a peer sex educator at my college, I have referred countless friends and fellow students to Planned Parenthood for annual exams, testing for sexually transmitted infections, birth control, and all-options pregnancy counseling. Beyond high-quality and affordable care, their health centers provide accurate information, respect and a sense of control over one’s health to every patient. Planned Parenthood is an invaluable resource for both women and men in Maine, and I trust their Action Fund to support candidates who will protect and expand access to sexual and reproductive health services — including a woman’s right to safe and legal abortion.

In contrast with Gov. Paul LePage, Michaud believes that women, not politicians, should have control over their own personal medical decisions. He has pledged to veto any legislation that threatens Maine’s Reproductive Privacy Act and supports initiatives that seek to expand access to health care for all Maine women and families. I urge fellow voters to follow the lead of the Planned Parenthood Maine Action Fund by supporting Michaud for governor this November.

Support Gratwick

I am writing in support of Democrat Geoffrey Gratwick in this November’s election for state Senate. Maine needs more middle-of-the-road members in the state Legislature. Gratwick genuinely cares about the residents in his district of Bangor and Hermon, regardless of their party affiliation.

He tries to benefit all residents by listening and incorporating ideas into public policy. He makes every attempt to work with other legislators to create fair and progressive policy for all Maine residents, not just a privileged few. The future of our state depends on the election of Democratic candidates with these unique qualities this fall.
