BANGOR, Maine — Golfers in Maine are blessed to have access to nearly 150 courses located throughout the state. Many of those layouts feature a hole that leaves a lasting impression in the minds of players — because of how difficult it is.

In seizing upon that theme, the Bangor Daily News is soliciting the input of golfers statewide to help identify the toughest holes in Maine.

In an upcoming story entitled “Tee to green: Maine’s mean 18,” we will profile the state’s 18 most challenging holes and describe the characteristics — location, length, trees, sand traps, water and other hazards — that give golfers fits.

We’re asking readers to submit their choices by email. Golfers should identify the course, the hole and some thoughts about what makes the particular hole or holes so difficult to conquer.

Respondents may list as many holes as they wish. Emails should be sent to BDN sports reporter Pete Warner at

We look forward to sharing the results with BDN readers later this summer.
