PALMYRA, Maine — A Dixmont man was arrested late Friday night after attempting to steal a vehicle from a Mud Pond road residence, according to police.

Deputies were summoned to the residence at 11:50 p.m., when a man saw Chadwick Bragg, 20, attempting to steal his Chevy Cobalt, according to Chief Deputy Dale Lancaster of the Somerset County Sheriff’s Office.

Lancaster said the vehicle’s owner was in bed when he heard the car being started and then stalling in the driveway. Bragg later claimed that he liked the sight of the Cobalt and wanted to hear it run, police said.

The owner subsequently ran to his driveway and saw Bragg and his dog in the vehicle, and he removed the keys from the ignition, Lancaster said.

As Bragg and the dog fled the scene on foot, the car’s owner went back into his residence, retrieved an undisclosed weapon, and pursued Bragg and confronted him a short distance from the residence, with a neighbor assisting, Lancaster said.

Police arrived shortly after and arrested Bragg. He was charged with unauthorized use of property and taken to the Somerset County Jail.
