Roland Francis Mayhew

HAMPDEN – Roland Francis Mayhew, 60, died on June 3, 2014, doing what he loved, fly fishing near the West Branch of the Penobscot River. He was born on November 14, 1953 in Bangor, the son of Ella Withee (Mayhew) Greenfield and Charles A. Mayhew.
He spent his childhood in South Portland, Saco, and Bucksport, Maine, graduating from Bucksport High School, Class of 1972, and the Eastern Maine Medical Center Nursing School, Class of 1978. He worked as a Registered Nurse at EMMC for almost 40 years, including 20 years as a Vascular Technologist. His primary passions were family and fishing; his love of the Maine outdoors, camping, hunting, and gardening were well known to anyone who met him. He was an avid bow hunter and craftsman who made his own arrows, built his own fly fishing rods, and tied countless numbers of flies. He served as a Boy Scout Troop Leader of Troop 41 in Hampden and frequently took family and friends on trips into the Maine wilderness he loved so much.
He is survived by his wife of 30 years, Phyllis Havens of Hampden; his son, Sky Mayhew of Sunnyvale, CA; his daughter, Elizabeth (Mayhew) Matson and son-in-law, Andrew Matson of Boston, MA; two brothers and sisters-in-law, Charles and Carol Mayhew of Bangor and Jeffrey and Jill Mayhew of Dedham; brother-in-law, Robert Havens of Sidney, NE; father-in-law, Joseph Havens of Kennebunk; and several cousins, nieces, and nephews. He was predeceased by his mother, father, and younger brother, Mark (Mickey) Mayhew.
Family and friends are invited to gather 5-7 p.m. Thursday, June 12, 2014 at Hampden- Gilpatrick Funeral Home, 45 Western Avenue, Hampden and 2 p.m. Friday, June 13, 2014 at the Unitarian Universalist Church of Bangor, 120 Park Street, for a memorial service and reception, with the Rev. Becky Gunn officiating.
