Camden Hills bleacher project nearing completion with addition of new sponsor

ROCKPORT, Maine — Progress toward the installation of new bleachers as well as a press box and storage space at Don Palmer Field on the campus of Camden Hills Regional High School is continuing, with plans to install the seating this year.

Camden National Bank recently became the latest major sponsor of the community bleacher project, according to Camden Hills athletic administrator Steve Alex.

The campaign is in its second year of private fundraising with the goal of generating $175,000 to fund the purchase and installation of a 650-seat set of bleachers and press box as well as cover related expenses.

“It’s really the last [athletic] facilities improvement that needs to get done at the school,” said Alex.

Don Palmer Field is the main venue for the Windjammers’ football, soccer, lacrosse, track and cross country teams, and it is hoped that with this new seating, the site also can be the home for additional community events and possibly graduation exercises.

“When this is done, we hope to be able to host conference events and [Maine Principals’ Association] championships,” said Alex. “This is also a community-based project, and during the offseason, we hope the community will look forward to possibly holding concerts and other events here.”

The addition of new seating through the community bleacher project also will allow the relocation of existing bleachers to the baseball, softball, field hockey and junior varsity soccer fields.

Alex said another $20,000 still remains to be raised, primarily to pay for furnishings for the main structure, including a public address system, and for improvements to the entryway to the bleachers.
