Fire destroys building at Topsham landscaping business

TOPSHAM, Maine — A large metal maintenance garage at a landscaping business on Augusta Road was destroyed by fire Tuesday night.

Firefighters were called just before 8 p.m. to respond to a shed fire at Linkel Construction at 288 Augusta Road. When crews arrived, they instead found fire consuming a 30-by-45-foot metal building, Topsham Fire Chief Brian Stockdale said Wednesday.

The building, which stored a dump truck and several welding stations, contained a variety of chemicals and oils, Stockdale said, but firefighters were able to access a space in the ceiling and pour enough water on the flames to avoid any problems caused by the potential spread or explosion of hazardous materials.

The fire was under control by about 8:30 p.m., although firefighters continued working at the scene until after 11 p.m.

No injuries were reported. The building and its contents were destroyed, but Stockdale said he had no estimate for the damages.

Investigators from the state fire marshal’s office were due at the scene Wednesday, and Stockdale said he hoped to determine the cause of the fire then. He said there is no indication that the fire is suspicious.
