KEARNEY, Nebraska — A Surry man was arrested Thursday evening after a Nebraska state trooper found 60 pounds of marijuana in the rental car he was driving, a Nebraska State Police lieutenant said Friday.

David H. Esty III, 31, is charged with possession of marijuana with intent to deliver, Nebraska State Police Lt. Bill Keeling said Friday.

According to Keeling, Esty was traveling on Interstate 80 in the Buffalo County town of Kearney in a 2013 rental Volkswagen Passat, and he was pulled over by a state trooper for following the vehicle ahead of him too closely.

“He was traveling east, toward home,” Keeling said, adding that Esty was on his way home from California.

During the traffic stop, the trooper’s dog indicated the odor of marijuana, Keeling said. He said that Esty consented to a search, and the marijuana was found in the trunk.

After his arrest, Esty was taken to Buffalo County Jail. He was released on bail, according to the jail’s automated inmate information system.

A court date has not been set.

When asked to describe the mass of the amount of marijuana seized, Keeling said it was “not that much. You could get it into a gym bag.”
