ORONO, Maine — A lone male robber held up the Bangor Savings Bank on Park Street Friday morning, according to police.

The suspect, believed to be in his late teens to early twenties, did not display a weapon but demanded cash, Orono Police Chief Josh Ewing said at the scene. No tellers were threatened, Ewing said.

Officers from Orono, state police and the Penobscot County Sheriff’s Office were dispatched to the bank, located adjacent to the entrance of the University of Maine’s campus, shortly after 9 a.m., Ewing said

As of 4 p.m. Friday, the suspect remained at large, Ewing said.

After receiving an undisclosed amount of cash and putting it into a cooler, the suspect fled out a back door into the woods, Ewing said.

The University of Maine was never locked down due to the robbery, the police chief said, but a text message was sent out to students via the University’s text alert system notifying students of the robbery, along with the robber’s description.

A state police canine team tracked the robber to the Talmar Woods area before the track was lost, Ewing said. Police believe the suspect may have entered a vehicle.

The robber was wearing a dark grey sweatshirt and a dark bandana and he is caucasian, standing 5 feet, 10 inches tall, Ewing said.

UMaine and Old Town police are assisting Orono, state police and sheriff’s deputies in searching for the suspect, according to Ewing.

“Right now, we’re out interviewing the public, knocking on doors,” Ewing said, noting that police are canvassing the area.

Ewing said police have no reason to believe the suspect is dangerous, but he’s advising the public to be on the lookout for him and call 911 or Orono police at 866-4000 if he is seen.

The bank in Orono was last robbed in 2010 by the man known as the “burly bandit,” who pleaded guilty to the robbery, according to BDN archives.
