HANCOCK, Maine — A motorcyclist was flown to a Bangor hospital Monday afternoon after he flipped over a guardrail on Route 1 and tumbled 40 feet down an embankment, according to Maine State Police.

The operator of the motorcycle, Roger Chipman, 59, of Gouldsboro, suffered serious injuries in the accident, state police said Monday.

Chipman was not wearing a helmet, according to Trooper Chris Smith. Further details about Chipman’s injuries were unavailable Monday evening.

The accident happened around 2 p.m. a few hundred yards from the eastern end of Washington Junction Road as Chipman was headed east on the highway, police indicated. He lost control of the motorcycle and was thrown from it when it struck the guardrail, police said. Chipman tumbled approximately 40 feet down the grassy embankment, coming to rest at the edge of the trees.

The motorcycle, a 2007 Suzuki Boulevard, slid several more feet down the road before coming to rest on its left side on the paved shoulder by the eastbound lane, police said.

Chipman was taken by County Ambulance to Maine Coast Memorial Hospital in Ellsworth and then transferred by LifeFlight helicopter to Eastern Maine Medical Center in Bangor, according to state police.

There is no indication that speed, alcohol or road conditions played a role in the accident, police said.

Traffic on Route 1 was restricted to one lane of alternating traffic for a few minutes immediately after the accident.
