BANGOR, Maine — A Brewer man pleaded guilty Thursday at the Penobscot Judicial Center to one count of sexual abuse of a minor, a misdemeanor, in connection with receiving explicit photos of an underage girl on his cellphone.

Alan Richmond , 21, was indicted in September by the Penobscot County grand jury on two counts of sexual exploitation of a minor, a Class B crime.

Richmond, who remains free on $5,000 unsecured bail, is scheduled to be sentenced April 7. The felony charges are to be dismissed at sentencing, Michael Roberts, deputy district attorney for Penobscot County said Thursday.

In a plea agreement with prosecutors, Richmond is expected to plead guilty to two additional counts of possession of sexually explicit materials, a Class D crime.

Roberts told District Court Judge John Lucy on Thursday that he would recommend Richmond be sentenced to a year in prison with all but six months suspended. As a result of the convictions, Richmond will be required to register as a sex offender for the rest of his life, the prosecutor said.

Richmond agreed to forfeit his computer and cellphone as part of the plea agreement.

By pleading guilty, Richmond admitted that he had contacted a 14-year-old local girl through social media and persuaded her to send him sexually explicit photos of herself. After the incident was reported to police, a search of his cellphone and computer turned up sexually explicit video of a 16-year-old girl, also from the area, Roberts said in September.

If he had been convicted of the more serious charge of sexual exploitation of a minor, Richmond faced a mandatory minimum sentence of five years and up to 10 years in prison.
