Ice fisherman from Raymond struck in head by stray bullet

By Abigail Curtis, BDN Staff

WEST GARDINER, Maine — An ice fisherman from Raymond who was struck in the head by a stray bullet Sunday was treated at a hospital for non-life-threatening injuries and released later that day.

Scott Fraley, 54, had been ice fishing with several friends on Cobbosseecontee Stream in West Gardiner when he was struck by the bullet, according to a press release issued Sunday evening by Cpl. John MacDonald of the Maine Warden Service. After the shooting, Maine game wardens, Maine State Police troopers and a Maine Marine Patrol officer canvassed the area where the shot had been heard. They found a man in the woods nearby with a rifle, according to MacDonald.

That man, Bryan Hickey, 21, of West Gardiner, is fully cooperating with the investigation, MacDonald said. The incident remains under investigation and will be reviewed by the Kennebec County District Attorney’s Office to determine whether any charges may be filed.
