BELFAST, Maine — A Searsport woman remains in jail after being arrested twice in two days for shoplifting from stores in two different cities, according to the Belfast police.

Police were called to the Belfast Hannaford on Sunday, Jan. 19, to investigate a reported shoplifter. Shae Garton, 25, had been detained by store officials after allegedly trying to leave the store without paying for all the items in her cart.

Garton told Officer Eric Kelley that she only had enough money on her EBT card to pay for a few of the items and needed to go to her car to get her credit card, according to Detective Sgt. Bryan Cunningham. Kelley went with her and learned that Garton’s credit card had expired last month.

“She told Officer Kelley she’d been arrested the day before at Ocean State Job Lot in Bangor,” Cunningham said. “She went into the store, picked up items and took them back for store credit.”

Garton had been released on bail after her Bangor arrest, with conditions stipulating that she not commit new crimes or possess alcoholic beverages, Cunningham said. At the Belfast grocery store, Kelley reported that Garton had alcohol in her cart.

“She claimed the alcohol was for her alcoholic relative,” Cunningham said.

Garton was arrested and charged with violation of conditions of release from the prior offense. She also was issued a summons for theft, Cunningham said. On Tuesday, she remained in police custody at Two Bridges Regional Jail in Wiscasset.
