Police break up underage drinking party in Berwick

By Kimberley Haas, Foster's Daily Democrat

BERWICK, Maine — A large number of underage partygoers fled from a house on Morrill Drive by jumping out windows and taking off on foot to avoid being arrested by police early Sunday morning.

Officers who arrived at the house to break up the party at approximately 12:30 a.m. were quickly overwhelmed by the number of people in attendance. Multiple backup officers were requested on scene at 12:35 a.m. By 12:50 a.m., police gave up on chasing after individuals due to a lack of available units, according to a message posted by Northeast Fire Alerts.

According to Sergeant Jeffrey Pilkington, nobody was hurt during the incident. Approximately 20 people were taken into police custody.

One juvenile was charged with furnishing a place for minors to consume or possess alcohol. That youth could be fined, put on probation, sentenced to community service, or a combination of all three, Pilkington said.

According to police, there was nothing going on in the community that prompted the party.
