HOLDEN – EUGENE J. ATHMER
HOLDEN – Eugene J. Athmer, 77, died peacefully, Wednesday December 25, 2013, surrounded by his family, at the Brewer Rehab and Living Center. He was born November 26, 1936, in Belleville, Illinois, the son of John A. Athmer and Nina A. Buettner Davis.
Eugene grew up in Belleville and enlisted in the United States Air Force when he was of age. He met and married Ethyl M. Cyr of Fort Fairfield. Gene served proudly for twenty years and was stationed in Maine, Texas, Washington, Illinois, Germany and Iceland. He retired at the rank of Technical Sergeant. Upon his discharge he spent three months in Saudi Arabia as a technical instructor. He then spent many years working as a purchasing agent for a contractor at Loring Air Force Base in Limestone. Gene loved to travel, go fishing, and play golf. He enjoyed trips to Florida, Las Vegas, and Illinois as well as cruises. His most favorite pastime involved time with his family. There are many fond memories of gatherings with food, cards and fun. He especially cherished time fishing and golfing with his brother-in-law, Richard. In September of 2011, Gene married Earlene Knight who was a great comfort to him in his later years. He was a member and past commander of the D.A.V.John F. Kennedy #6 and the American Legion Post #0012 of Bangor.
Gene is survived by his loving wife Earlene Mae Athmer of Holden, a son Carl Athmer and his wife Bonnie of Hudson, a sister Audrey Mudd and her husband Clem of Belleville IL, a brother Don Davis and his wife Joyce also of Belleville IL. In addition to his parents he was predeceased by his first wife of fifty years Ethel M. (Cyr) Athmer and a sister Bonnie Sigman of Illinois.
Friends may call from 5-7 p.m. Wednesday, January 1, 2014 at Brookings-Smith, 133 Center St., Bangor. A service of remembrance will be held 10 a.m. Thursday at the funeral home. A committal service with military honors will follow at Mount Pleasant Cemetery. The family invites relatives and friends to share conversation and refreshments at the Family Reception Center of Brookings-Smith, 163 Center St., following the committal.
