MACHIAS, Maine — The Maine Development Foundation, a nonpartisan organization that promotes long-term economic growth, has named Harold Clossey its new president and CEO.
Clossey, a Calais native, has been executive director of the Sunrise County Economic Council — the economic development arm for Washington County — since 2006. His appointment was announced by the SCEC on Wednesday.
Clossey will close out his work for the SCEC on Dec. 20 and begin his new duties in January.
“We are fortunate to have someone of Harold’s caliber as our next leader,” said MDF board chairman Aldo Servello in a news release distributed by the SCEC. “He’s dynamic, engaging and extremely passionate about the things we’re doing at MDF.”
“[Clossey] impressed with his strong work ethic and willingness to engage leaders from all walks of life,” added Servello. “[He] will help drive the next chapter in our goal of turning research into action for the state of Maine.”
Shirley Erickson, board chairman of the SCEC, credited Clossey with being “the driving force behind the council, and all that it has accomplished.”
“MDF is getting a visionary leader who gives his all every day,” said Erickson. “On behalf of the board and staff, we wish Harold every success in his new venture, and thank him for a job well done.”
“The Sunrise County Economic Council has been instrumental in so many projects in the county over the years,” said Chris Gardner, chairman of the Washington County Commission. Clossey has been a part of that success and Gardner wished him the “absolute best.”
Clossey said he enjoyed his work with the SCEC.
“At the same time, this transition is bittersweet and exciting, both professionally and personally,” he said.
The Washington County organization is “poised for more great things in the future, and I wish the council nothing but continued success and impact in our region’s economy,” said Clossey.
The SCEC likely will name an interim executive director and establish a search committee at the board’s December meeting, said Erickson.
