MEDDYBEMPS – Edna Donovan, 91, passed away Monday, Nov. 25, 2013, at home with her daughter by her side. Edna was born April 14, 1922, in Calais, daughter of the late Harold and Olive (Wade) Stanhope.
She graduated from Calais Academy, class of 1939, and worked at the local pharmacy and Ware Knitters until attending beautician school in Bangor. Edna owned and operated her own beauty salon for several years. On May 3, 1946, she married her love, Philip Donovan. Edna was a member of Daughters of the American Revolution, Rebekah Lodge, and enjoyed knitting, pets, traveling, and spending time with her family.
In addition to her parents, Edna was predeceased by her husband, Philip; a daughter, Linda Ross; and a nephew, Peter Donovan. Surviving are her daughter, Melva Long of Alexander; two grandchildren, Lee Roderick of Meddybemps, and Jessica Melhiser of Alexander; four great-grandchildren, Mallory and Alex Roderick, and Ashley and Ryan Melhiser; son-in-law, John Ross of Guntersville, Ala.; sister-in-law, Marion Lagel of South Windsor, Conn.; nephews, Wayne, David, Gregory, and Louis Donovan; a special cousin, Wayne Harmon; many cousins and friends; and her canine companion, Tuffy.
Visiting hours will be held 2-4 and 6-8 p.m. Friday, Nov. 29, at Mays Funeral Home, 26 Church St., Calais. A funeral service will be held 11 a.m. Saturday, Nov. 30, at Immaculate Conception R.C.
