PORTLAND, Maine — An accident late Tuesday afternoon involving multiple vehicles left a Portland woman injured and clogged southbound traffic on Interstate 295, according to authorities.
A three-car crash was reported in the area of Franklin Street around 4 p.m., according to Stephen McCausland, spokesman for the Maine Department of Public Safety. A 2014 Chevrolet Cruze operated by Susan Tanzer, 62, of Pennsylvania was struck by a 2001 Dodge pickup truck driven by Jonah King, 25, of South Portland after Tanzer slowed down while traveling in the right lane, McCausland said. A third vehicle, a 2006 Chevrolet Equinox driven by Dennis Carson, 53, of Portland, then reportedly struck the Cruze and overturned, coming to rest on its side.
Carson’s mother, Lois Carson, 80, of Portland, who was a passenger in his vehicle, is in critical condition at Maine Medical Center as a result of the crash, McCausland said.
Southbound lanes were closed for more than an hour after the accident, with traffic backed up until shortly after 7 p.m. All three vehicles were towed from the scene.
The accident remains under investigation, McCausland said.
