Albany edges UMaine in America East field hockey semifinal

DURHAM, N.H. — Molly Mariano scored off a pass from Daphne Voormolen in the 56th minute Thursday evening, providing the only goal of the game as the University at Albany beat the University of Maine 1-0 in an America East Conference semifinal at the University of New Hampshire.

The second-seeded Great Danes (16-4) advance to face No. 1 New Hampshire in Saturday’s league championship game.

Coach Josette Babineau’s Black Bears closed out the season with an 11-9 record.

Maxi Primus made two saves for Albany, which outshot UMaine 8-5 and posted a 10-3 advantage in penalty corners.

Natasha Ford made two saves for the Bears, with Danielle Aviani registering both shots on goal. UMaine made one defensive save.

Men’s Basketball

UMFK opens Saturday

The University of Maine at Fort Kent men’s basketball team will open their regular season Saturday at 2 p.m. against Fisher College in Fort Kent.

The revamped Bengal roster features nine new players including Aroostook County stars Jared Hafford from Easton High School as well as Mike McClung and Joe Stiles who both played for Central Aroostook. Joining that trio from Maine is Abdi Hussein who starred at Lewiston High School.
