PORTLAND, Maine — Portland police issued 22 summonses to underage drinkers over the weekend thanks to a compliance check at local businesses, police said Tuesday.

More than 80 businesses throughout the city, including bars, convenience stores and grocery stores, had undercover officers on patrol, according to Portland police Commander Gary Rogers.

Police performed the checks in coordination with Operation Safe Start, Rogers explained.

The buyers who attempted to purchase alcohol with fake identification were immediately issued a summons by police, Rogers said.
