Let’s lay it all out there: Why, yes, I am a conservative

Last week, one of Maine’s largest radical left wing groups decided to put the Informed Women’s Network on the map by infiltrating a private event where Gov. Paul LePage was speaking, sending two young apparatchicks (misspelling intended) to make a secret recording of the meeting.

One smirked as she slunk out. “Yeah, I had to applaud every now and then so they wouldn’t catch on.”

Uh, note to these naive youngsters: Lawyers tell us you probably broke Maine privacy laws — and could be prosecuted — by taping members’ conversations as well as the governor in a private meeting without their consent. But I’m sure you were warned about that, right? Or don’t privacy laws and basic decency apply to the political hacks of the left?

The sneaks dutifully turned over their ill gotten gains to their excited mouthpiece. How disappointed he must have been to find, well, nothing. That’s right; the operative had to take snippets out of context (paging NBC “news” ) and leave out salient points to try to make LePage look bad. Ho-hum, business as usual for the left-wing extremists.

But what he (and others who have been reporting on this) also write is that the nonpartisan (yes, our members are from across the political spectrum) Informed Women’s Network is — wait for it — “conservative!” Oooooooo, wow, that was hitting below the belt!

Well, since I founded the IWN and serve as its president, let me tell you where I personally come down on this subject.

If being conservative means holding our elected officials at the local, state and federal level accountable for spending our hard-earned tax dollars responsibly, and that we should be able, as hardworking taxpayers, to keep more of our money, then, yes, I am a conservative.

If being conservative means believing in constitutional government, then, yes, I am a conservative.

If being conservative means embracing free-market capitalism as the best system for everyone’s prosperity and a belief in the legitimacy of market outcomes, then, yes, I am a conservative.

If being conservative means believing that America is an exceptional nation that is the rightful leader of the free world, then, yes, I am a conservative.

If being conservative means being against government greed and for smaller, smarter, more efficient government, then, yes, I am a conservative.

If being conservative means believing in a hand up and not a hand out, the dignity of work and free determination for every human being, then, yes, I am a conservative.

If being conservative means believing that individuals should take personal responsibility for their actions and accept the consequences of their actions, then, yes, I am a conservative.

If being conservative means believing in a strong national defense and supporting our military and veterans, then, yes, I am a conservative.

If being conservative means giving of my time, talent and treasure to the benefit of my community and the truly needy whom we have a moral obligation to help, then, yes, I am a conservative.

If being conservative means believing that the problem with socialism is that sooner or later you run out of other people’s money, then, yes, I am a conservative.

If being conservative means believing that every child deserves an education free of political indoctrination in schools controlled by parents, not unions, then, yes, I am a conservative.

If being conservative means believing that our national language is English, that our borders should be respected and that those who make a choice to come here illegally should receive absolutely nothing from the hardworking American taxpayer, then, yes, I am a conservative.

If being conservative means believing that our country was founded on Judeo-Christian truth and that God belongs in our conversation, then, yes, I am a conservative.

If being conservative means believing women who choose to work in the home and raise their families are doing the most important work of all, then, yes, I am a conservative.

Far from being the pejorative word some make it out to be, I have seen that there are many self-identified “liberals” who actually think the same way on these fundamentals.

So left-wing extremists, beware whom you call conservative, lest you pay them the ultimate patriotic compliment.
