Waterville man charged with arson after allegedly setting fire at apartment

By Ryan McLaughlin, BDN Staff

WATERVILLE, Maine — A Waterville man is facing an arson charge after he intentionally set a small fire in an apartment he shares with his parents, according to officials.

Timothy Staples, 18, was arrested on Thursday evening, according to Sgt. Ken Grimes of the state fire marshal’s office.

Waterville Fire Chief David LaFountain said Staples was alone in the residence and set the fire inside a bathroom in the apartment.

LaFountain said the apartment sustained minimal damage after Staples allegedly put burned material in a Dumpster.

Grimes said an investigation conducted by Sgt. Ken MacMaster produced enough probable cause to arrest Staples and charge him with arson.

Staples was brought to Kennebec County Jail and later released after an arraignment on Friday.
