AUGUSTA, Maine — October is Breast Cancer Awareness Month, and Maine State Police are joining in on the cause.

State police cruisers throughout the state will use a pink breast cancer awareness license plate throughout the month, according to Department of Public Safety spokesman Stephen McCausland.

The first plate was attached to a cruiser Monday with five breast cancer survivors, all associated with state police, looking on.

“The Maine State Police is pleased to participate in this effort to honor the many lives lost each year to this disease, and to promote the importance of early detection,” Col. Robert Williams said.

The plates were purchased by the Maine State Troopers Association and will be auctioned off as collector’s items by the Maine Cancer Foundation, with all proceeds going to Maine cancer groups.
