NEWPORT, Maine — Newport police are asking for the public’s help in identifying a man they believe has been stealing cash from a farm stand.
The farm stand, which is located on Mullen Road, operates on the honor system, in which customers take fruits and vegetables and deposit money in a locked box.
The owner does this “because he can’t man it all the time,” said Newport Police Chief Leonard Macdaid. “But someone’s prying open the money box and taking the money.”
Police set up a camera in an attempt to photograph the alleged thief. A little after 5 p.m. Wednesday, the camera took a picture of someone reaching toward the locked box.
Macdaid said he believes the man is responsible for as many as five thefts at the farm stand this year.
“It’s not a lot of money, but it’s the point of the thing,” said Macdaid. “And he’s apparently not going to stop until we catch him.”
Macdaid said this is the first year in his nine years with the department that money has been stolen from the farm stand.
Anyone with information on the thefts or the man pictured is asked to contact Officer Amanda Smith at 368-3263.
