Two men arrested near Freeport ball field, charged with cultivating marijuana

FREEPORT, Maine — Police arrested two men on Sunday near the Hunter Road athletic field after allegedly finding them with marijuana plants.

Charles Leonard, 27, of Brunswick, and Michael Gammon, 48, of Richmond, were charged with cultivating marijuana. Leonard was also charged with violating conditions of release, according to Freeport police Chief Gerald Schofield.

At 8:37 p.m. Sunday, police allegedly found a car with its lights out at the recreational field complex. Upon further investigation, officers discovered a bag containing six marijuana plants placed against the front of the vehicle, Schofield said.

He said the bag was not sealed, and the officer could see what appeared to be freshly harvested marijuana plants.

A woman found with the men was not charged, according to Schofield.

The incident remains under investigation.

The two men are scheduled to appear in West Bath District Court Nov. 19.
