BELFAST, Maine — For Regional School Unit 20, the third time was indeed the charm.
Voters in the eight towns that make up the school district finally passed a budget for the current academic year. The $33,389,902 budget is less than 1 percent more than last school year’s budget but will result in the district’s eight towns having to raise an additional 10 percent in property taxes because of decreases in state aid.
Though residents of Morrill, Searsport and Swanville voted down the budget, 914 voters altogether were in favor with 749 against.
The budget eliminates 4.5 teaching positions that had been in place last year and has two fewer support staff positions and 1.5 fewer library technician positions. It also eliminates middle school after-school activities.
