BELFAST, Maine — A Brooks man who was acquitted in one of Waldo County’s most notorious murder trials eight years ago was indicted this week on two Class A counts of arson and other charges relating to his alleged efforts last month to set his wife’s car on fire.
Jerome A. Reynolds, Jr., 62, was arrested in early July after police received a call for help from his wife. When they arrived at the home, they found that Reynolds allegedly had poured motor oil on her vehicle and lit it on fire, according to police reports. The Waldo County Grand Jury also indicted him this week with criminal mischief, refusing to submit to arrest, terrorizing and assault. The arson charges are punishable by up to 30 years in prison and a fine of up to $50,000.
In 2005, a Waldo County jury found Reynolds not guilty of murder in the shotgun slaying of his father’s unarmed 60-year-old girlfriend, Janet Bacon. He admitted to shooting the woman, who was dressed in a nightgown and slippers, but claimed in the trial that he was frightened of her and feared for the safety of his father. Four years after the acquittal, a different judge ruled against Reynolds in a wrongful death lawsuit filed by Bacon’s son. Superior Court Justice Jeffrey Hjelm assessed punitive damages against Reynolds of $50,000 and compensatory damages of $308,108.
