Adopt a pet at reduced rates

BANGOR, Maine — While the dog days of summer mean barbecues and trips to the beach for most, for the staff at the Bangor Humane Society, it is the busiest time of year for animal intakes.

The society needs members of the community to adopt a pet. Currently, the shelter has more than 100 cats and kittens available for adoption, and dozens of dogs. It also has a waiting list of 150 cats and nearly 50 dogs needing to be surrendered for adoption. There also are many more residing in foster care.

In an effort to find new homes for pets now available for adoption, and to help the many more waiting to be surrendered, the Bangor Humane Society is offering an August adoption promotion. Cats 7 months and older may be adopted at a cost of $5, and all large breed dogs 7 months and older may be adopted on a “Name your own fee” basis, with a minimum of $25.

The humane society encourages those who can afford to donate more to do so, as all adoption fees go toward the care of the many cats currently in the care of the society. The discount program is effective throughout August.

Animals adopted from the Bangor Humane Society are vaccinated, spayed or neutered and behavior evaluated.

Those who can’t adopt a pet may wish to make a donation and help spread the word about the many animals needing a home.
