Report: Driver who crashed into bicyclists in Biddeford, killing 1, had been drinking

By Tony Reaves, BDN Staff

BIDDEFORD, Maine — A man who police say drove his truck into a family on bicycles on Aug. 2 had been drinking, police told the Portland Press Herald.

Police said a blood alcohol test on David Labonte, 56, of Kennebunkport, showed he had alcohol in his system despite conditions barring him from having any blood alcohol while driving.

One of the bicyclists, Jamerico Elliot, 52, died of his injuries Wednesday. His 15-month-old son remains in critical condition. Elliot was riding a bicycle with his 15-month-old son, Lavarice, and bicyclist Melodie Brennan, 30, of Saco on Elm Street last week when police say Labonte crossed the centerline, drifted across traffic and hit Elliot’s bicycle, as well as Brennan’s before crashing into a parked pickup truck.

Brennan was treated and released from Southern Maine Medical Center in Biddeford last week.

According to the Journal Tribune newspaper, Labonte was convicted of operating under the influence in both 2006 and 2005, and had speeding convictions in 2005, 2008, 2009 and 2010. Watch Bangordailynews.com for updates
