BANGOR, Maine — Day 2 of double-elimination play at the Zone 1 American Legion baseball tournament was a casualty of Mother Nature’s rainy demeanor Tuesday.
An elimination game between No. 5 Penquis (11-12) and No. 2 Hampden (16-6) and a winners’ bracket contest between No. 1 Bangor (21-1) and No. 3 Brewer (14-8) both were postponed a day due to steady rain that soaked the region, including the tournament site at the Winkin Complex on the campus of Husson University.
The Penquis-Hampden game originally was scheduled to begin at 4 p.m. followed by the Bangor-Brewer contest at 7 p.m., but the final decision to push those games back to Wednesday was made shortly before 3 p.m., according to tournament committee member Dan Campbell.
Wednesday’s revised schedule now consists of three games and is slated to begin at noon with the Bangor-Brewer contest, followed at 4 p.m. by the Penquis-Hampden clash. The Bangor-Brewer loser would face the Penquis-Hampden winner in a 7 p.m. elimination contest, with the Bangor-Brewer winner advancing directly to Thursday’s championship round.
The winner of Wednesday’s first and third games would meet at 4 p.m. Thursday, and if both surviving teams have a loss after that contest an if-necessary game to crown the Zone 1 champion would follow at approximately 8 p.m.
The Zone 1 champion will advance directly to the state tournament that begins in Augusta on Wednesday, July 31. The Zone 1 runner-up will play the Zone 4 (Portland area) runner-up in a state tournament play-in game at 3 p.m. Saturday, also in Augusta.
