Water main break affects 20 Portland buildings

By Ryan McLaughlin, BDN Staff

PORTLAND, Maine — Crews are working to rectify a water main break on Congress Street near the intersection with St. John Street.

Portland Water District Spokeswoman Michelle Clements said approximately 20 buildings are without water, but Maine Medical Center is not one of them.

A damaged sidewalk on Congress Street has been cordoned off for safety reasons, Clements said, and motorists are advised to avoid the area while crews work to fix the problem.

Power at The Inn at St. John and the Hong Kong Market have been shut off, Clements said, as water entered the basements of both of those establishments.

Crews are expected to work on the six-inch water main for much of the day. Clements expects crews to be on scene for up to 10 hours, but water should be restored prior to that.
