Bronco wins Junior League baseball state tourney

BANGOR, Maine — Bronco Little League of the Hampden, Hermon, Winterport and Newburgh area completed its run through the Maine Junior League Baseball State Championship tournament on Sunday with a 5-2 victory over Falmouth at Mansfield Stadium.

Bronco, which beat Ellsworth 10-1 and downed Falmouth 8-1 on Saturday, advances to the East Regional in Freehold, N.J., and begins play on Aug. 3 against the New Jersey state champion.

In Sunday’s elimination contest, Falmouth beat Ellsworth 14-4. Falmouth also had topped Ellsworth 9-1 on Saturday.

In Sunday’s title game, Noah Gardner’s sacrifice fly in the third inning gave Bronco (3-0) the lead for good.

Tyler Beaton spaced two hits and struck out four, giving up two unearned runs. He also slapped an RBI single in the first inning and added another single. Ben Huston hit two singles and a sacrifice fly

In Sunday’s first game, Falmouth scored eight runs in the second inning to take charge.

Chris Camelio led the way with a double, two singles and two RBIs, while Robbie Armitage singled three times. Colin Lento and Hogan Tracy each plated two runs with a pair of singles.

Nicholas Bagley paced 0-3 Ellsworth with a double, a single and two runs scored.

In Game 1 on Saturday, Zach Nash pitched a complete game, allowing 1 run on 2 hits, with 3 strikeouts, to lead Bronco.

Bronco broke the game open with a six-run sixth inning, highlighted by Matt Leach’s RBI triple and Jackson Gilmore’s RBI double. Matt Leach drove in three runs with a triple and a single and Christian Greener singled twice.

Cooper Henderson and Jack Lee singled to pace Ellsworth.

In Game 2 on Saturday, Chris Carmelio, Cam Guarino and Hogan Tracy combined to limit Ellsworth to 3 hits and earn the victory.

Robbie Armitage knocked in three runs with a double and two singles and Reese Armitage tripled and doubled with an RBI for 1-0 Falmouth. Camelio singled twice.

Nicholas Bagley, Sam Giffin and Zack McGraw singled for 0-2 Ellsworth.

In Game 3 on Saturday, Andrew Gendreau pitched a four-hitter, allowing 1 unearned run with one walk and two strikeouts to keep Bronco unbeaten.

The winners (2-0) scored five times in the first two innings behind Tyler Beaton’s two-run single and Noah Gardner’s run-scoring hit, both in the first inning.

Jackson Gilmore belted a two-run double and a single and Matt Leach added an RBI double for Bronco.

Chris Camelio singled twice for 1-1 Falmouth.

At Waldoboro, Caleb McCartney and Quinton Hastings combined on a four-hitter with seven strikeouts to propel Windham to the win in Sunday’s first game.

Brady Afthim singled twice for the 1-1 winners, while Nolan Kent and Harrison Boyle each hit a triple and Dylan Gorman doubled.

Kolby Moore led 0-1 Waldo County with a double.

At Waldoboro on Sunday, Tanner Evans tripled and singled to help Old Town improve to 2-0 in the tournament.

Zack Dill, Matt Seymour and Casey Downs combined on a three-hitter with nine strikeouts for Old Town, which got singles from Micah Betters and Sam Martin.

Jackson Curtis singled twice and Chase Johnson added a single for 0-1 Ellsworth.

In Game 1 on Saturday, Kurtis Edgerton doubled and singled and Matt Rouselle singled twice to spark Biddeford.

Scott Kelley tripled and Ashton Crowell doubled as five pitchers combined on the win for 1-0 Biddeford.

Nolan Kent doubled for 0-1 Windham.
