Bangor man arrested after alleged drunken group fight on Third Street

BANGOR, Maine — A group of intoxicated people got into a fistfight at the junction of Third and Cedar streets late Saturday that brought a rush of police to the area to break it up, Bangor police Lt. Steve Hunt said Sunday.

“They gave a bunch of people disorderly conduct warnings, a half-dozen to a dozen people, but one fellow by the name of Vernon Goguen failed to comply,” the lieutenant said of the four or five officers who went to the fight to investigate.

Goguen, 29, of Bangor reportedly was given several warnings to stop being argumentative but failed to heed the warnings and eventually was placed under arrest for disorderly conduct and taken to Penobscot County Jail. Goguen was released from jail early Sunday, a jail official said.

What caused the group to start fighting is not noted in the police report, Hunt said, adding that no weapons were found.

“The phone rang off the hook for that one,” he said, referring to the number of 911 calls received at the police station’s dispatch center.
