Hermon, Scarborough all-stars notch victories in state Little League softball tourney

ROCKLAND, Maine — Hermon and Scarborough recorded convincing victories during the second day of the state Little League softball tourney for ages 11-12 Sunday.

South Lewiston and Rockland each opened tourney play with victories on Saturday as South Lewiston beat Kennebunk 3-2 and Rockland edged the Downeast Family YMCA of Ellsworth 4-2 in seven innings.

On Monday, those teams now face elimination-round games in the double-elimination tourney as Ellsworth will take on South Lewiston at 3 p.m., followed by the Rockland vs. Kennebunk contest at 5:30 p.m.

Hermon will play Scarborough in a winners bracket game at 3 p.m. Tuesday.

In Sunday’s first game, Hermon scored in each of the first three innings to take an 8-0 lead, and withstood a Rockland rally en route to the win.

Rockland closed the gap to two runs with a six-run third inning.

The teams each scored three runs in the fifth and Hermon pulled away in the top of the sixth with six more runs.

Breanne Oakes pitched three innings for the win, giving up three runs on two hits with six strikeouts and three walks. Katie Windsor was the starting pitcher and pitched two innings, and Olivia Albert pitched the third.

Olivia Howe took the loss for Kennebunk, giving up three runs on three hits, striking out three and walking two in two innings of work.
