FREEPORT, Maine — Amatos restaurant on Main Street was burglarized overnight Wednesday, with the culprit causing about $2,000 damage to the building and a safe and absconding with an undisclosed amount of cash, according to police.

Freeport police responded just after 6:30 a.m. after an employee arrived at the business at 114 Main St. and reported the break-in, Freeport Police Lt. Susan Nourse said Friday.

“The back door had been pried open and the safe had been pried open,” she said.

The burglary took place sometime between 10 p.m., when the restaurant closed, and 6:30 a.m. when the incident was reported, she said.

No other burglaries were reported in the area, according to Nourse. Police have no suspects, and the incident remains under investigation.
