Maine Medical Center repairs leak over operating rooms

PORTLAND, Maine — A water leak in the ceiling above several operating rooms at Maine Medical Center caused the hospital to postpone and reroute some scheduled surgeries over the weekend.

Three of the seven operating rooms affected by the leak, caused by a failed pipe Saturday afternoon, are now back online, according to Matt Paul, director of communications and public affairs at MMC. The hospital hopes to have the remaining operating rooms back in order within the next two to three weeks, he said.

Some scheduled surgeries were handled elsewhere within the hospital while others were routed to MMC’s surgical center in Scarborough, Paul said.

“We used other locations within the hospital that allow us to perform procedures,” he said.

Otherwise, the impact on patient care was limited, Paul said.
