PITTSFIELD, Maine — A local woman was arrested early Monday morning for allegedly setting fire to a vehicle and fleeing the scene, according to police.

Wendy Jean Murray, 41, of Pittsfield was arrested and charged with arson, a Class A crime punishable by up to 30 years in prison and a maximum fine of $50,000.

At about 1:30 a.m. Monday, witnesses reported that an open-top Jeep Wrangler on Hartland Ave. had been set on fire and Murray was fleeing the scene, according to Pittsfield Police Chief Steven Emery.

“There was a small fire inside the vehicle,” Emery said in a release. “Officer [Greg] Sides was able to extinguish the fire, though the vehicle sustained several thousand dollars in damage.”

The vehicle’s owner and Murray are acquaintances, said Emery.

Murray was taken to Somerset County Jail in Madison, where she remained Monday afternoon. She is being held on $20,000 bail.

Pittsfield police Officer Marty Cochran investigated the complaint with Sides. The Pittsfield Fire Department also assisted at the scene.
