AUGUSTA, Maine — Two people were killed Monday in a crash that has shut down a major highway between Augusta and the Maine coast.
The accident on Route 3 was reported shortly after 7 a.m., according to Augusta Deputy Chief Jared Mills. The crash occurred just east of Fairview Estates.
Mills said an eastbound vehicle driven by Dean James, 45, of China crossed the center line of the roadway and struck the rear portion of a westbound vehicle before striking 46-year-old Laura Hall of Liberty’s westbound vehicle head-on, Mills explained.
James was transported to MaineGeneral Hospital in Augusta where the driver was pronounced dead, the deputy chief said. Hall was pronounced dead at the scene.
The driver of the second car, a Togus police vehicle, was not injured, the deputy chief said. The name of that vehicle’s driver was not released.
Both lanes of Route 3 remain closed as police reconstruct the accident.
