Weather forces revisions in Eastern, Western Maine high school baseball, softball championships

By Ernie Clark, BDN Staff

AUGUSTA, Maine — Rainy weather has forced postponement of Tuesday’s scheduled Eastern and Western Maine Classes B and D championship baseball and softball games.

Those games, combined with subsequent conflicts with various end-of-school-year activities, have prompted several revisions in the regional finals schedule, with games now scheduled for Wednesday and Thursday.

Wednesday’s Eastern Maine baseball schedule has Stearns of Millinocket against Bucksport in the Class C final at 3 p.m. at Mansfield Stadium in Bangor and the Class A title game between Oxford Hills of South Paris and Messalonskee of Oakland at 5 p.m. at Morton Field in Augusta.

The Eastern C final originally was scheduled for 7 p.m. but Maine Principals’ Association assistant executive director Mike Burnham said both schools agreed to switch the start to 3 p.m. to accommodate Class Night activities at Bucksport slated for 6 p.m. Wednesday.

Tuesday’s originally scheduled Eastern Maine Classes B and D finals now will be played Thursday at Mansfield Stadium, with the Class B game between Winslow and Waterville at 3 p.m. and the Class D game between Bangor Christian and Southern Aroostook of Dyer Brook at 7 p.m.

The Eastern Maine softball schedule on Wednesday begins at 3 p.m. with the Class C matchup between Calais and Bucksport at Coffin Field in Brewer, followed by the Class A final between Bangor and Skowhegan at 7 p.m. at Cony High School in Augusta.

Two EM softball finals are now scheduled for Coffin Field on Thursday, with Limestone and the Maine School of Science and Mathematics facing Penobscot Valley of Howland for the Class D crown at 3 p.m. and Gardiner playing Oceanside of Rockland-Thomaston in the Class B title game at 7 p.m.

All Western Maine baseball and softball finals will be held at Saint Joseph’s College in Standish.

The baseball finals begin Wednesday with Marshwood of South Berwick against Westbrook in Class A at 3 p.m. and Falmouth against York in Class B at 6:30 p.m. Thursday’s WM baseball schedule has Dirigo of Dixfield against Saint Dominic of Auburn in Class C at 3 p.m. and Buckfield against Richmond for the Class D crown at 6:30 p.m.

Western Maine softball finals Wednesday have Greely against Gray-New Gloucester in Class B at 3:30 p.m. and Scarborough against Sanford in Class A at 7 p.m. Thursday’s schedule has Richmond against Greenville in Class D at 3:30 p.m. and Madison against Dirigo in Class C at 7 p.m.

Normally the same divisions in East and West would play regional finals on the same day, but the Western B and C championship-game schedules were flip-flopped to accommodate school activities already scheduled for Thursday.

“York baseball had a conflict with its graduation at 6 p.m. Thursday, and we looked to play that game earlier but that would have presented a conflict for Falmouth,” said Burnham. “Then Gray-New Gloucester has senior scholarship night on Thursday, so we had three of the four Western Class B teams with conflicts on Thursday.

“So then we checked with the Class C schools and Dirigo has both boys and girls playing so either way they wanted to play both on the same day, and then we checked with Madison and Saint Dom’s and they said OK so we were able to make those changes.”

State championship games are scheduled for Saturday.

The Class A baseball final will be played at 2 p.m. at Morton Field in Augusta, the Class C game at 2 p.m. at Mansfield Stadium in Bangor, and the Class D game at noon and the Class B game at 4 p.m., both at Saint Joseph’s College in Standish.

The Class A softball title game will begin at noon at Cony High School in Augusta, the Class C final at noon at Coffin Field in Brewer, and the Class B game at 11 a.m. and the Class D game at 3 p.m., both at Saint Joseph’s College.
