Towns in Freeport-area district to vote on budget, bond for high school renovations

By Beth Brogan, BDN Staff

FREEPORT, Maine — The towns of Durham, Freeport and Pownal, which make up Regional School Unit 5, vote Tuesday on a $17 million bond to renovate Freeport High School.

The funds would pay for a two-story, 31,000-square-foot addition including a 4,500-square-foot cafeteria/food court, as well as a new track and a turf athletic field.

If the three towns vote to approve the bond, the addition would address what officials say are overcrowded classrooms in the 1961 facility.

Proposed renovations include bringing the building into compliance with the Americans with Disabilities Act, reconfiguring the facility to address new security requirements, and general upgrades.

The three towns also vote Tuesday on the proposed 2013-2014 $26 million municipal budget.
