BANGOR, Maine — Police are investigating an assault that occurred on Tuesday evening shortly after 7:30, Sgt. Paul Edwards said Friday.

Officer Wade Betters responded to the corner of Hammond and Cedar streets after it was reported a 55-year-old man was lying face-down in the middle of the road.

The victim was suffering from head injuries and told Betters at the scene he was assaulted by a man for unknown reasons.

Police have released a surveillance image of a person of interest who may have been accompanied by a woman with an infant. The image was taken at the Rite Aid at Third and Union streets shortly before 7:30 p.m. Tuesday, according to Edwards.
