ELLSWORTH, Maine — A local man was arrested Sunday afternoon after smashing a carpet cleaner with an axe during a fight with his wife, police said Monday.

Joseph Gallagher, 29, of Ellsworth, was arrested on charges of domestic-violence terrorizing and domestic-violence assault. He was brought to Hancock County Jail where he stayed overnight before being released on $2,500 unsecured bail on Monday.

According to Ellsworth Police Detective Dotty Small, Gallagher’s wife was trying to clean the couple’s Grant Street apartment when the fight began. At this time, it is unknown what the couple were fighting about.

“He got angry at her and was screaming at her and grabbed the axe and began chopping at the rug cleaning equipment,” according to a police report quoted by Small. “He then began throwing stuff around, and that scared her.”

The woman made a phone call to police, and by the time Officer Chad Wilmot arrived, the fight had de-escalated, though Gallagher was still on the property. He was brought to the jail without incident.

Both charges facing Gallagher are Class D crimes, punishable by up to one year in jail and a $2,000 fine. Gallagher will make his first appearance in Hancock County District Court on July 12.
