PRESQUE ISLE – Glenda E. Winslow, 89, passed away May 9, 2013, at Presque Isle Rehab and Nursing Center. Glenda was born Feb. 14, 1924, in Presque Isle, daughter of Charles and Elsie (Trask) Willey.

Glenda began working part time as a bookkeeper for Northern National Bank, while she was still in high school. She continued working there for many years and then later for Aroostook Trust Company, Maine Public Service and Agway as a bookkeeper. She also worked as an Avon representative. Growing up, the kids remembered Glenda worked long enough to save enough to buy a new car for the family, then stayed home with her children until it was time to buy another one. In her retirement years Glenda worked as a nanny for the Lyons family in Presque Isle. She also loved spending time with and caring for her grandchildren. Glenda also loved to crochet, knit and sew and loved to teach others to do so as well. She taught adult education classes and taught Sue and her friends after school how to read patterns and loved taking them shopping to buy fabric and patterns. She also made elaborate Halloween costumes for her grandchildren every year, in addition to elaborate dresses for her granddaughters. Glenda was also very involved with the Maine Junior Miss for many years and loved organizing and running pageants. She loved the Northern Maine Fair and ran operations for the exhibition hall for many years. Glenda was a lifetime board member of Northern Maine Fair Association and she enjoyed many years working as the fair secretary. She married the love of her life, Vaughn Winslow, June 11, 1949. They built their family home before they were married and held their wedding ceremony in the living room of their home. This home was the center of their life, where they raised their family and entertained family and friends. Vaughn and Glenda were happily and devoutly married for 63 years. After their retirement, they enjoyed traveling across the country together, visiting their son, John, and granddaughter, Jessica, touring national parks and stopping to see every monument and friend along the way. The family was blessed to have Vaughn, Glenda and Glenda’s sister, Helen, living in the same nursing home, where they could all visit with each other every day. A very special thank you is sent to the staff and caregivers of PIRNC for the loving care provided to Glenda over the last ten years.

Glenda is survived by her children and their spouses, Sue and Joe Powers of Mapleton and John and Dorothy Winslow of Bel Alton, Md.; grandchildren, Jesse, Katelyn and Michaela Powers, Bradley Johnson, Kyle Upchurch and Jessica Winslow Blaylock; and great-grandchildren, Jackson and Jaylee Blaylock, Bradley Jr. and Braelyn Johnson and expected great-granddaughter, Piper York. In addition to her parents, Glenda is predeceased by her husband, Vaughn; and siblings, Roy, Gilbert, Goldie, Vesta, Helen and Alice.
