Safe recovered in New Sharon with bottom smashed open

By Donna M. Perry, Sun Journal

NEW SHARON, Maine — A safe believed to have been stolen was recovered in an outlet of Crowell Pond on May 3 with its bottom smashed open, Trooper Mathew Casavant of the Maine State Police said.

The Franklin County Sheriff’s Department received a call from a fisherman earlier this spring notifying them that a safe was found in the stream leading out of the pond on Route 41, he said Friday.

Casavant, Franklin County Sheriff’s Office and Maine State Police Underwater Recovery Unit recovered the safe.

The safe was obviously stolen due to the condition it was but no one has claimed it, Casavant said.

The safe is tan and is about 18 inches to 24 inches wide and about that same height and 15 to 20 inches deep, he said.

There was no markings of the brand or type of safe it was.

It is unknown where the safe may have come from, he said.
