Fire destroys large shed near home in Jay

By Donna M. Perry, Sun Journal

JAY, Maine — A fire destroyed a large shed Wednesday night at a residence on Route 133, Assistant Fire Chief Mike Booker said Thursday.

The Robert Hall family wasn’t home and had left at about 3:30 p.m., he said. The fire was reported at 6 p.m.

A state fire investigator is continuing interviews Thursday to determine the cause, Booker said.

A passerby stopped and a neighbor used a garden hose to keep the house cool so the fire did not spread, he said. The house is about 20 feet from the shed.

The fire spread to some trees and started to spread to the grass.

About 20 Jay firefighters responded. When they arrived, the shed was engulfed in flames, and the fire spread into the woods, he said.

The shed was insured.

Besides the shed, a snowmobile, a lawn mower, two rototillers, a new chain saw and a bunch of hand tools were destroyed, Booker said.

There were no injuries.
